Golden berry, physalis, Cape gooseberry, ground cherry or Inca berry ““ whatever you call them, this sweet and tart berry is one superfood you may want to consider adding to your diet. Part of the nightshade family, this exquisitely bright orange ancient fruit grows in the mineral rich soils of the Peruvian Andes and can be consumed both fresh or dried, though you are more likely to find the latter in grocery and health food stores. Containing an impressive amount of protein (approximately 16 per cent for its weight), the golden berry is high in carotene, bioflavonoids, vitamins A and C, phosphorous and pectin helping to regulate the digestive track and lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and also contains (per serving) more iron than spinach, more fibre than prunes and more potassium than bananas. Add them to smoothies, cookies and desserts, top off yogurt and salads or just eat them on the go for an incredibly nutritious snack.
